How the Virginia paycheck calculator works
This calculator estimates your take-home pay by subtracting federal income tax, Virginia state income tax, Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%) from your gross annual salary. High earners pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax above the IRS threshold.
Federal income tax
Federal tax uses progressive brackets ranging from 10% to 37%. Each dollar is taxed only at the rate of the bracket it falls into (this is called your marginal rate, not your effective rate). The calculator applies the 2026 IRS brackets (IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32) and the $16,100 standard deduction for single filers.
Virginia state income tax
Virginia uses progressive state tax brackets sourced from Virginia Department of Taxation (tax.virginia.gov), 2025 Form 760 instructions, amounts stated for Taxable Years 2025 and 2026. The state standard deduction is automatically applied based on your filing status. Virginia has four brackets topping out at 5.75% on income over $17,000, applied after the state standard deduction ($8,750 single / $17,500 married filing jointly for 2026). Virginia has no local income tax. Its brackets are the same for all filing statuses.
FICA (Social Security + Medicare)
FICA taxes are flat: 6.2% Social Security on wages up to the 2026 cap of $184,500, plus 1.45% Medicare on all wages. Single filers earning over $200,000 pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax on income above that threshold. FICA is charged on a wider base than income tax: a traditional 401(k) contribution does not reduce it. Only Section 125 cafeteria plan benefits, such as health, dental and vision premiums and a health FSA through your employer, lower your FICA wages.
